Fernanda Froes at Soho Beach House
Fernanda Froes, a Brazilian-born and Miami-based artist, presents the solo show "Beyond the Forest" at the Soho Beach House. The installation becomes a space of profound transformation, where the artist explores the hall as a symbolic space, transcending mere physicality and reinventing a utopic environment. Emphasizing the interaction between ecology, colonization, and the forest ecosystem,"Beyond the Forest" serves as a contemporary reminder of the need to preserve the natural and cultural heritage of the Americas, blending art, science, and history.
Froes' artistic process begins with drawing and extends to diverse media, including fiber, paint, printmaking, text, and collage. In this installation, she explores historical botanical pigments like brazilwood, indigo, and mangrove tannin, each of them narrating a unique story, mirroring the diversity of a forest's inhabitants alluding to their cultural significance, much like the mysteries hidden within a forest. The artist incorporates natural historical dyes, bridging the past to the present and inviting contemplation of our shared history. The Brazilwood tree, once symbolic of the Brazilian coastline, endured centuries of European exploitation for its vibrant red dye, resulting in its endangered status today, echoing the difficulty of endangered species in forests.
"Beyond the Forest" is a testimony to the artist's comprehensive research and commitment to deepening our understanding of the forest's resilience and hope.
"I don't have a new path. What I have is a new way of walking.”
