Forbidden bird

“To be strong is to first live according to your weakness”

—David Lapoujade

“Forbidden bird” is an installation that comprises two neon pieces. In one of the pieces, the public read “NO SE”. In the other one, we read “VOLAR”. Both pieces are made of neon red lights mounted on a metal sculpture.

Since both pieces are installed on the beach sand, the public can glimpse both the sky and the sea through the hollow space of the neon letters. A poetic dialogue is then established: between the desire to fly—announced by the words in red neon —and the infinite blue of the sky and ocean.

For this project, the language chosen is neither the American English—spoken in the United States—nor the Portuguese—the mother tongue of the artist who now lives in New York. The Spanish language was elected not only to promote a more direct dialogue with the Latin community in Miami, but also because it is understood as a place of encounter. Standing for this place “in-between”—so familiar to the foreigners living in a new country, therefore, living “in- between-languages”, “in-between-cultures”.

The title “Forbidden bird/Pássaro Proibido” is a reference to Maria Bethania’s 1976 album of the same name. During the 1970s, Brazil was under a harsh military dictatorship. And the idea of a bird represented the desired freedom.

“Forbidden bird/Pássaro Proibido”, talks about desire, freedom, and, at the same time, the impossibility of this desire in the face of reality. I don’t know how to fly. I want to fly.

The impossibility here is not a renunciation, but a movement towards action and decision. It is not from today that artists try to touch the impossible, in a double role of drowning and survivor.

Desiring the impossible can also be the ultimate — and almost desperate — attempt to expand the living reality. An attempt to create spaces, folds, and cracks when faced to an unbearable situation.

RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Call for artists in partnership with The Fountainhead

About:

The Fountainhead, founded in 2008 by Kathryn and Dan Mikesell, believes that intimate access to artists and art opens people’s minds to the value of our diversity and fosters conversation, creating a more tolerant, respectful and inspired world.  To accomplish this, we need to nurture and empower both artists and audiences. For artists to create, they need to make a sustainable living. For people to engage with artists and art, we need to provide an inclusive, accessible and welcoming environment.

Fountainhead serves as a catalyst for opportunity and growth in the professional careers of artists, provides Miami art professionals and enthusiasts access to local artists and emerging talent from around the world, cultivates new audiences for the arts and collaborates with institutions and businesses supporting the growth of Miami’s art and cultural community building a global family that transcends all borders and continues to give back.

Heart to Heart

Heart to Heart

Campaign extended!

Heart to Heart campaign extended!

Due to the incredible receptivity of the initiative and in response to various requests from friends throughout the U.S., we are extending the campaign for one more week!

We are continuing our efforts to reach the goal of being able to send 1,000 food baskets to families in need in Brazil. All proceeds will benefit Gerando Falcões and Semea—Sementes do Amanhã.

We count on your support during this extended period—one more week!

With that, our mural event in Wynwood has been postponed so we can all celebrate at the end of the project together! We will be announcing a new date on Monday.

Stronger together in Heart to Heart!

We are proud to announce the launch of Heart to Heart, a 2-week long campaign to raise funds in support of nonprofits that organize food banks in Brazil. The pandemic has hit Brazil particularly hard, and many people are in need of our help.

Along with a committee of friends (swipe to see participants), we are working towards creating awareness about this issue—just $10 buys 1 full food basket for a family in need!

To close out the campaign, join Anna Biondo on TBA date at 545 NW 22nd St. in Wynwood where she'll be painting a collective mural that pays homage to the victims of COVID-19. Donate $10 and you can participate in painting the mural.

All proceeds will benefit Gerando Falcões and Semea—Sementes do Amanhã.

TAKE ACTION AND DONATE TODAY!
